this american life episode 392: someone else’s money

personal commentary: healthcare reform opponents make many arguments. that healthcare reform is too expensive (false). that healthcare reform would mean rationing (false). that healthcare reform would mean government bureaucrats would dictate your healthcare (false).
what we really need to ask any opponent of healthcare reform is: who in their opinion isn’t entitled to health coverage, or better yet, who should have to die for a lack of health coverage?
45,000 americans die every year from a lack of comprehensive health coverage. that’s 15 9/11 attacks every year. where is the ‘war on lack of health coverage’? 9/11 prompted two unnecessary wars and a complete overhaul of the US defense, intelligence, and emergency response apparatus. where is the overhaul for healthcare?
the real ‘death panels’ are healthcare reform opponents who are content to let 45,000 mostly poor americans die every year to ensure special interest funding for their re-election campaigns.

Largely due to digital downloads rending the portability of compact discs obsolete, people are starting to gravitate to vinyl as the physical format of choice. A Democratic senator urged President Obama on Tuesday to include the military budget in his proposed spending freeze.

“Defense represents a significant part of our discretionary spending in this country. The defense establishment needs to be under fiscal discipline, as do all of our agencies.” Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) told reporters in the Capitol. “I don’t think defense should be exempt. If there are extraordinary things that occur that require us to respond for national security, we always will be prepared to do that. But to exempt the normal military spending just because it’s military, to me, is wrong.”

The Supreme Court may have changed the landscape of campaign spending today: in issuing its decision on Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, it announced that corporations and unions can now spend money directly in support of candidates.

Justice Kennedy, in the majority opinion, reasoned that the government can’t discriminate against speakers based on their corporate identities, and that “all speakers, including individuals and the media, use money amassed from the economic marketplace to fund their speech, and the First Amendment protects the resulting speech.”

This basically eliminates a middleman: before today, corporations and unions had to set up PACs (political action committees), filed separately with the IRS, that would receive donations. And they did. Corporations and unions spend millions of dollars on elections. Now, however, the accounting firewall is gone, and Wal-Mart or the Service Employees International Union, for instance, can spend their corporate money directly on candidates.

Recap Firefox Extension for PACER:

RECAP is a free extension for Firefox that improves the experience of using PACER, the electronic public access system for the U.S. Federal District and Bankruptcy Courts.

RECAP is an extension (or “add on”) for the Firefox web browser that improves the PACER experience while helping PACER users build a free and open repository of public court records. RECAP users automatically donate the documents they purchase from PACER into a public repository hosted by the Internet Archive. And RECAP saves users money by alerting them when a document they are searching for is already available from this repository. RECAP also makes other enhancements to the PACER experience, including more user-friendly file names.

RECAP is a project of the Center for Information Technology Policyat Princeton University. It is one of several projects that harness the power of the web to increase government transparency.

Just last week, animal protection groups filed a motion to have Jimmy released on grounds of Habeas Corpus, arguing that he is being denied his rights to freedom of movement and to a decent life, in Rio’s Criminal Court.
